Who deserves the Capital Punishment??

Well, leave Afzal aside. Forget about Santosh Singh. The person who really needs to be sent to gallows is Ekta Kapoor. My nights are reduced
to watching sobbing women on my television screens than enjoying quality time with my family. One friend of mine is not served food after 8:30 because her mum needs to watch her favourite protagonist cry and marry all the guys on the show or atleast fall in love with them. So many husbands across India are compared to various characters by their wives. Does not matter whether the men potraying these characters are married or not, loyal or disloyal. Husbands need to be like Mihir Virani or Rishabh Bajaj- caring, loving and sensitive. Men are also looking for Tulsis and Prerna's, the symbols of the Indian woman. Gone are days of Ram-Sita jodis. The new age couple should be like Tulsi-Mihir. No one wants Shravan to be their son. They want a Karan as their son. Even, Maneka, Rambha and Srupanakha are substituted with Komolika, Jigyaasa and Mandira. Omigod! Where are these mythological characters?

The reasons why I want her to be hung is obviously the regressive and extreme manners in which she potrays the Indian woman. She is not the helpless, sobbing and sacrificing lady. A feminist like me is hurt in the manner in which these women take decisons and never speak out. Mujhe bees saal ka vanvaas lena padhega. Barring few scenes in which she slaps or walks in an office, there is nothing progressive about her. In the end, the show is named only after the main character. There is actually nothing praise worthy about the protagonist. Secondly, in an era where sitting around the table and eating dinner with family has become a luxury, these serials entice the women and even men to watch TV without the rest of family members. The family meal concept according to a recent survey shows helps the children to grow up to be ideal citizens. A survey shows that in UK, only 64% teenagers eat at night with family compared to Italy's 98%. Mind you, UK has the highest number of teenage criminals and teenage pregnancy. This survey has been directly linked to the above facts. Its funny, programmes that show about the whole family set-up are responsible for the growing distance between the mother, father and their children. Have you ever experienced a power cut anytime between 8 and 11 in the night? I have and the impatience with my mother is quite visible. Its not the heat or darkness that bothers her but missing the vamps next evil plan bothers her! Thirdly, I would want to see her hung is because the kind of fashion sense instilled by her in everyone who watches the show. Those horrible bindis, disgusting make-up and atrocious colour schemes can make any person vomit! Lastly, she is responsible for many toddlers not learning the alphabet properly. Some tweens believe that K is the only letter and some think it ends there. So much pressure on little minds. Psst. Also, last heard, other letters were planning to commit suicide because of all the attention grabbed by letter K!

My Lord, I rest my arguement. Did I say, I have missed so many episodes of FRIENDS thanks to Kasamh se? She definitely needs to be hung!

i think the audience is to be blamed...i mean why can they realise they're being served shit???.....hey actually want more of it...there are women i know who have to watch it twice in a day....once in the afernoon and at night...that jus takes the cake...seriously...
everytime i see the bluddy soap vamps and "heroines" onscreen i wish they fell down a flight of stairs, broke their necks and got paralysed...

I Agree with the above two comments.A product sells only when there is demand for it.And there seems to be plenty of demand for all ekta kapoors regressive soaps. No demand no supply:)I dunno whether 2 laugh or get get angry when i hear titles like "beti ek paraya dhan" etc.The producers n directors of these serials need 2 change their ideas n thoughts on what women are as much as the audience does.We need more feminists so that there will be a feminist serial maker who wil further the cause rather than take it backwards like miss.kapoor's serials seem to be doing!

Pat on ur back! neat effort. You used statistics well. A good comparison was drawn with the mytholoical characters. But I think hanging is a bit too much as her punishment. We cant forget India is a Free country you cant restrict freedom of speech. For that matter even movies have loads of effect on the minds. We cant restrict her but we can just hope this lady realsies that as a responsible tv house honcho who has the power of media she can do a lot more better than dish out new K's. i just hope the indian public shd get bored of these soaps and move to more thrillers, comedies et cetra which makes them more progressive.Ah! aksha cant forget u did give a humourous effect to this piece.

Gallows for Afzal - Collective Conscience or Ignorance:

In the sensational 13 Dec 2001, Parliament of India attack case, the issue of death sentence for Mohammed Afzal Guru should be analyzed within the boundaries of the existing law and not on the basis of so called collective conscience.

The evidence of conspiracy against Afzal stands on his own testimony- he confessed that he brought one of the 5 men involved in the attack from Srinagar to Delhi and helped him buy a used car and on the recovery of explosives from his house, and most crucially, on records of cellphone calls to the five. But the evidence is open to doubt. The explosives recovery record is not watertight. The police couldn't explain why they broke into his house during his absence while he was in jail - when the landlord had the key.

The cellphone record traced several calls from the five men to number 98114-89429. The police allegedly impounded the instrument from Afzal while arresting him in Srinagar. The instrument had no SIM card. So the only identity mark was its IMEI number, unique to each instrument.

There are only two ways to find this tell-tale number: open the instrument, or dial a code and have the number displayed. But the officer who wrote the recovery memo said on oath that he neither opened nor operated the instrument. Besides, the testimonies regarding the date of purchase of the phone with a new SIM card ( December 4, 2001 ) and its first recorded operation ( November 6, 2001 ) don't match. The benefit of doubt heavily weighs in favor of Afzal.

Afzal's conviction and sentencing violates cardinal principles of natural justice on the following 3 grounds:

Firstly, the charge-sheet was against 12 persons. The masterminds were Azhar, Tariq Ahmed and Ghazi Baba. It is significant to note that they are Pakistanis. They have neither been arrested nor have they been tried. If Pakistan extradites them, then they shall escape the gallows. The Parliament was attacked de facto by 5 Pakistanis. They were responsible for the death of 9 members of the security forces. Afzal did not cause anyone's death, he did not injure anyone. He did not mastermind the attack. The Apex court of India has observed that there is no direct evidence of his involvement.

Secondly, all the courts, including the Apex Court have acquitted him of the charges under Prevention of Terrorism Act ( POTA ) of belonging to any terrorist organisation.

Thirdly, Afzal was denied a fair trial. The investigation was illegal. The courts noted that evidence was fabricated and he never had a lawyer who represented him. The Judge passed an order giving Afzal the right to cross-examine witnesses but it is a herculean task, even for a person with legal training but devoid of knowledge of criminal law. The provisions of the International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights ( ICCPR ) have been grossly disregarded.

The Apex Court has held that, "the incident, which resulted in heavy casualties, had shaken the entire nation and the collective conscience of the society will only be satisfied if capital punishment is awarded to the offender."

Collective conscience of a society whose members are probably unaware of the fact that Afzal a former Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front ( JKLF ) man had surrendered and convinced others also to surrender.

Collective conscience of a society, some of whose members allegedly attacked Senior Advocate Ram Jethmalani's office when he offered to defend Afzal. Its a pity that Afzal did not have the benefit of ace defence counsel Ram Jethmalani who would have torn the prosecution case apart and made the difference between life and death for Afzal.

Collective conscience of a society, more than half of whose members, still do not know that Afzal is acquitted of all charges under the POTA.

Collective conscience of a society which is still unaware of the fact that the dependents of victims of the attack have not yet been rehabilitated properly.

Which ever way you look at it, its not collective conscience but collective ignorance.

Each one to their own taste. And what other options do we have? It's not like most people would watch if something with even a remotely modern veiw was made.N all soaps are regressive by nature- whether it be General Hospital or Kyunki.Cause- lack of any subject matter that actually matters-most soaps won't touch AIDS awareness with a 1oft pole. But that doesn't mean all soap addicts should start watching the news. They'll eventually grow out of it someday.N if we don't want more addicts, then it's us who's got to make youth unplugged get the higher TRP's.
